Are you ready to make a difference? Perhaps you'd like to counsel children with behavioral difficulties or work with seniors, run a homeless shelter or treat addictions, promote workplace diversity or change social welfare policy - all to help people function at their best in society. That would make you an ideal social welfare major or minor.
The undergraduate social welfare program at UAlbany teaches you how to advance social, economic and environmental justice and to serve people who are vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed. You will gain firsthand experience working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and/or communities to create change and improve social conditions.

Develop Skills through Internship
During your final year in the program, you complete a structured internship, 16 hours a week with an agency that provides social work learning opportunities with clients and client systems. The two-semester field education practicum enables you to develop valuable, practical skills in a supportive and supervised setting. Sites used for the field practicum are varied. They include public and voluntary agencies, such as children and family services, health care, aging, mental health, substance abuse, homelessness, and schools.
By the end of your field placement, you’ll know how to apply what you’ve learned in ways that lead to positive outcomes with real clients and client systems.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
