If you earn a Master of Arts in Social Work at Wright State, you will be eligible to become a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in Ohio. Please refer to the Ohio Counselor Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board for more information. Your scope of practice will include applying advanced generalist knowledge, skills, and values in direct practice, administration, and advocacy across different social service settings while working with persons across the lifespan.

Graduate International Alumni Scholarship

A $10,000 annual scholarship for full-time enrollment will be awarded for F-1 and J-1 international students who have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at Wright State and would like to enroll for a second degree. Students will need to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of admission to be eligible. The scholarship is renewable for 4 semesters so long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship cannot be combined with any other Wright State funded scholarships.  
 
Scholarship Details

• Must be an international student on an F1 or J1 visa.
• Must be charged a non-resident tuition surcharge.
• Students may receive only one merit scholarship or tuition discount
• Students must be enrolled full-time.
• The annual scholarship amount is divided evenly between Fall and Spring Semesters. If you are a continuing student attending full time in the summer, complete the Summer Scholarship Request Form.
• Funds are awarded as available, so apply for admission into a graduate program early.
• Renewable contingent on maintaining a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the academic year.
• It can be used for graduate non-resident tuition only.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
