Career Outlook

• The number of students requiring special education services has grown steadily in recent years due to improvements that have allowed learning disabilities to be diagnosed at earlier ages.
• According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook, career opportunities for special education teachers are expected to increase by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018as many districts report problems finding adequate numbers of licensed special education teachers.
• Special education teachers at the elementary and pre-school level have the best outlook, with projected growth of 20 percent. Middle school special education teachers are not far behind, at 18 percent. Additional coursework is needed to teach preschool special education classes.
• Expected growth for secondary school special education teachers is projected at 13 percent. Many openings will likely derive from turnover and retirements, as well as growth of the school-age population.

National Louis University International Opportunity scholarships
All international students admitted to a National Louis University Bachelor's degree program will receive an annual, renewable scholarship equal to 10% of the full-time tuition rate (valued up to $7,599* ).
Eligibility

• Available to international students only
• Students are only eligible to receive one NLU resource per academic year
• NLU scholarships can only be used to cover tuition costs and are not refundable to the student
• Students must maintain full-time status (14+ credits/term) and continuous enrollment (Summer optional)
• Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
• Students must adhere to all university policies in order to remain eligible to receive NLU scholarships

• This scholarship will be automatically applied to students’ accounts upon acceptance into the programs

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
