Program Overview

A Pathway in Science is designed to develop strong foundations in design, critical thinking, and research.

In the First Year Pathway students complete the International College Portsmouth (ICP) at University of Portsmouth first year of the degree, undertaking the same modules, in the same classes as students entering the University directly. Alongside the International College Portsmouth (ICP) at University of Portsmouth modules, students entering through the First Year Pathway will have additional support and tuition from International College Portsmouth (ICP) at University of Portsmouth.

First Year

A First Year pathway is available for students who:

• Don’t meet the entry requirements to enter university level study directly (but hold equivalent to AS/A level studies)
• Feel that additional support at the start of university studies will help them stand a better chance of success
• Have been away from studies for a period of time
• Come from a different academic environment to that of the UK

Progressing from First Year

At International College Portsmouth (ICP) at University of Portsmouth we offer a first year or stage 2 level study. Either students will enter this pathway following completion of the foundation, or for students that have completed equivalent of A level study we also have an entry point at first year of a bachelor’s degree.

Upon completion of the first year, or Stage 2, you will seamlessly progress to the second year of your chosen degree with the University, and no longer be registered with International College Portsmouth (ICP) at University of Portsmouth.

Geography

If you’re interested in the physical nature, characteristics and environment of the world, you can couple your interest with professional skills on this professionally accredited BSc (Hons) Geography degree course.

You’ll learn about the natural environment, how it was formed, what threatens it and how we can protect it. You’ll deepen your understanding of the world and develop professional skills in areas such as communication, problem solving, decision making and teamwork.

When you complete the course, you'll be prepared for a career in everything from environmental management to teaching and academic research.

You could earn more than the average graduate too – 5 years after graduation, female geography graduates earn 11.6% more than a typical female graduate and male graduates earn 2% more than a typical male graduate (Institute For Fiscal Studies, 2018).

• Use high-powered tech in our labs, including laser survey technology, drones, GIS and photogrammetry equipment and environmental simulation cabinet

• Have the chance to experience some of the societies or landscapes you’re studying by doing field work
• Enrich your studies by hearing from guest speakers from public, private and non-profit sectors
• Have the option travel overseas for field work in places such as Berlin, Malta, Sicily and Uganda
• Be able to choose to study abroad at one of our link universities in Poland, Spain or France
