At Bath Spa University many of our undergraduate programmes can be combined, so you don’t have to limit yourself to one subject. If you choose to study a combined award then in Year One you’ll start by studying both subjects in equal depth, then from Year Two you can choose whether to continue with an equally joint course, or a Major/Minor route.
Drama
BA Honours Drama is designed as a liberal arts program which engages with creativity, culture and enterprise, and which seeks to bring into contact academic and industry relationships. It includes collaborations with the subject areas English, Creative Writing, Music and Theatre Production and is underpinned by the themes of collaboration, digital literacy, creativity, employability, research and professional practice.
The focus of the program is on:
The programme structure locates practice within a framework of ideas, histories and critical concepts and allows you to strategically acquire knowledge, skills and understanding through active participation in processes of research, performance, reflection and evaluation. We offer you strands of study in ensemble performance and performance analysis that include modules in performance skills and performance making. We also offer optional modules in areas such as performance and media, writing for performance, Shakespeare, acting and directing, and theatre for social change.
For those of you who wish to specialise in-depth in a particular area of study, we offer the option of two bespoke pathways: Writing for Performance, and Musical Theatre. The Drama degree thus allows you to choose between a programme with a clear and specialised trajectory, or a programme that provides you with a more open and varied study experience.
Psychology
The programme begins at a modest pace and ends by opening up conceptual and career possibilities that you may not have previously considered.
We begin by introducing you to the five main psychological perspectives: biological, cognitive, developmental, individual differences and social, alongside research methods. Additionally, the historical and conceptual underpinnings of Psychology will be explored throughout.

Psychology Careers
Some of our graduates have completed, or are currently taking postgraduate education at the Master's and PhD levels. Graduates with single or major honours in Psychology can apply directly for postgraduate training, in order to work towards becoming a professional psychologist.
The majority of Psychology graduates, across the country, do not become professional psychologists. Some of our graduates have gone on to train in counselling. Many students choose to undertake PGCEs and a number of these are gaining experience for Educational Psychology courses. Other students go into management, sales and advertising, probation work and human resources. Psychology is an attractive option since students learn both numerative/scientific skills and people skills

Work placements, industry links and internships
You’ll benefit from visits from industry professionals. Previous visitors have covered a range of specialisms including: playwriting, directing, acting, television production, theatre in education, and children’s theatre. We also have partnerships with local venues, local schools and local community groups.
You'll also get the chance to take part in Dramafest – a festival of performance that's devised and run entirely by students. This event typifies our way of teaching, which is to enable you to experience a wealth of roles and approaches so that you can find your passions and choose to specialize in them if you wish.
Drama students create the material for Dramafest, then perform and produce it. They design and construct the sets. They take on roles in stage management, publicity, and health and safety. In doing this, they gain transferable skills such as project management, collaboration and teamwork, that they can use in a range of careers.
Dramafest will be a chance for you to discover your strengths and define your own roles within a project; an invaluable skill in the workplace. Find out more about opportunities within the Drama department on our interest area page.
