Careers / Further study

• The BTC prepares you for a successful career as a barrister, giving you the necessary skills, knowledge and network to maximize your chances of securing pupillage.
• Many of our graduates go on to work as barristers, working either as self-employed or in-house counsel, or for the Government Legal Profession or Crown Prosecution Service.  
• Other graduates take their BTC into careers as legal associates, managers or legal advisers, or into other sectors.
• Alongside support from our award-winning university careers services, you'll receive careers advice and support specific to this course, including access to CV clinics, careers talks, 'ask the experts' events and mock interviews, to enhance your chances of obtaining pupillage and help you plan your career path. We can also help with planning for a career overseas through our international careers service.
• After completing the PGDip, you have the option of undertaking further taught, dissertation or project modules and graduating with an LLM Bar Training Course.

As well as working with charities such as Support Through Court, we have our own Business Law Advice Clinic, where you can tap into diverse work experience opportunities, to give back to the community and enhance your employability at the same time.

At an additional, but highly reduced cost, we also offer students the opportunity to become a civil commercial mediator through an internationally respected mediation training provider.

Scholarships

Two new scholarships for PGT students with a payment deadline of 01 June 2026.

• £2,500 scholarship for students who pay an £8,500 deposit
• £3,500 scholarship for students who make full payment

No separate application is required. The payment must be completed and reflected in the UWE account by the deadline, after which the scholarship details will be included in the CAS letter.

• Postgraduate Scholarship September 2026 intake deadline: 01 August 2026. 

Eligibility

International fee-paying students with an offer for a full?time, in?person PGT course who meet all entry requirements and are not receiving another UWE tuition fee reduction.

UWE Bristol Global Success Scholarship

The UWE Bristol Global Success Scholarship is a three-year award for international undergraduate students at UWE Bristol.

The scholarship offers a reduction of up to £9,000 over the three years of study, helping students develop academically, professionally and personally, while actively contributing to the UWE Bristol community. 

Key eligibility:

• Offer to study a full-time undergraduate degree (course exclusions may apply)
• Meeting academic and English language requirements 
• Not already sponsored or receiving another UWE tuition discount
• Submitting the scholarship application within 14 days of receiving the invitation 

Continuing eligibility (years two and three)

The scholarship in years two and three is subject to you fulfilling specific engagement activities in each year of study. These include participation in student support, marketing and recruitment initiatives, helping future students learn more about life at UWE Bristol.

Activity will be monitored throughout your study. If you don't meet the minimum engagement requirements, your award will be forfeited in continuing years.

Application process:
Eligible applicants are automatically considered when applying for a qualifying course. Those who meet the criteria will receive an email invitation to apply and must respond within 14 days. 

Continuing eligibility:
Awards for Years 2 and 3 depend on students completing annual engagement activities, such as supporting student experience, marketing, and recruitment initiatives. Insufficient engagement may result in the scholarship being withdrawn for these years.

There are various options through which a student can get a post study work visa in the UK. 
Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa for the graduates with a genuine and credible business idea. 
Tier 2 (General) is the leading immigration visa to work in the UK.
Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme is for students who have completed their Ph.D. and is valid for 12 months for them to work, look for work or set up a business. 
Tier 5 Youth Mobility is for individuals of certain countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand aged between 18 -30 who wish to move to the UK. 
Tier 5 GAE is for individuals who want to come to the UK for work experience, training, research or a fellowship. 
UK Ancestry is for individuals who are a citizen of a commonwealth and plan to work in the UK and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
