Careers / Further study

• There is a projected shortage of planners so there will be a range of opportunities in the public, private and voluntary sectors.
• You could choose a career in an area linked to the environment such as housing, tourism, economic development, regeneration, and environmental protection. You could also go into research and teaching.
• Many of our students progress to become professional members of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The quickest route for this requires further study. Options for this at the UWE Bristol Planning School include MSc Urban Planning or MSc Planning and Urban Leadership. Both of these programmes can be studied in full and part-time modes to fit around your individual circumstances.
• Planning and Urban Leadership can be studied online giving you complete flexibility. After completing this study, you then need to take a programme of work experience under the RTPI's Assessment of Professional Competence. You can then become a Chartered Planner and use the letters 'MRTPI' after your name.
• You can also achieve chartered membership by undertaking a longer period of work experience that will require you to work to becoming an Associate and then a Chartered member of the institute.
• Past students have gone on to work for local authorities, planning research centres and private sector companies including Turley Associates, Terence O'Rourke, Crest Nicholson, Persimmon and Savills.

Scholarships

Two new scholarships for PGT students with a payment deadline of 01 June 2026.

• £2,500 scholarship for students who pay an £8,500 deposit
• £3,500 scholarship for students who make full payment

No separate application is required. The payment must be completed and reflected in the UWE account by the deadline, after which the scholarship details will be included in the CAS letter.

• Postgraduate Scholarship September 2026 intake deadline: 01 August 2026. 

Eligibility

International fee-paying students with an offer for a full?time, in?person PGT course who meet all entry requirements and are not receiving another UWE tuition fee reduction.

UWE Bristol Global Success Scholarship

The UWE Bristol Global Success Scholarship is a three-year award for international undergraduate students at UWE Bristol.

The scholarship offers a reduction of up to £9,000 over the three years of study, helping students develop academically, professionally and personally, while actively contributing to the UWE Bristol community. 

Key eligibility:

• Offer to study a full-time undergraduate degree (course exclusions may apply)
• Meeting academic and English language requirements 
• Not already sponsored or receiving another UWE tuition discount
• Submitting the scholarship application within 14 days of receiving the invitation 

Continuing eligibility (years two and three)

The scholarship in years two and three is subject to you fulfilling specific engagement activities in each year of study. These include participation in student support, marketing and recruitment initiatives, helping future students learn more about life at UWE Bristol.

Activity will be monitored throughout your study. If you don't meet the minimum engagement requirements, your award will be forfeited in continuing years.

Application process:
Eligible applicants are automatically considered when applying for a qualifying course. Those who meet the criteria will receive an email invitation to apply and must respond within 14 days. 

Continuing eligibility:
Awards for Years 2 and 3 depend on students completing annual engagement activities, such as supporting student experience, marketing, and recruitment initiatives. Insufficient engagement may result in the scholarship being withdrawn for these years.

There are various options through which a student can get a post study work visa in the UK. 
Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa for the graduates with a genuine and credible business idea. 
Tier 2 (General) is the leading immigration visa to work in the UK.
Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme is for students who have completed their Ph.D. and is valid for 12 months for them to work, look for work or set up a business. 
Tier 5 Youth Mobility is for individuals of certain countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand aged between 18 -30 who wish to move to the UK. 
Tier 5 GAE is for individuals who want to come to the UK for work experience, training, research or a fellowship. 
UK Ancestry is for individuals who are a citizen of a commonwealth and plan to work in the UK and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
