Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in the Built Environment

Program Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provides foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three discipline areas: Sustainable Building Engineering, Information Systems Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.

Humber's Bachelor of Engineering - Sustainable Building Engineering program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to become professionals in the rapidly evolving field of sustainable building design and construction. The program integrates principles of engineering, architecture and environmental science to create a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the challenges and opportunities in the construction industry related to sustainability.

Students receive a well-rounded education, covering diverse aspects of sustainable building engineering including structural design, energy efficiency, materials science and environmental impact assessment. Students engage with the latest technologies and methodologies in sustainable design and construction, staying abreast of industry advancements and best practices. Practical experience is emphasized through hands-on projects, simulations and real-world case studies. Students have access to state-of-the-art labs and facilities to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting and have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through placements with industry partners, enhancing their employability upon graduation.

This program builds teamwork skills with group projects and interdisciplinary courses mirroring real-world work environments. Project management skills are honed, covering aspects such as budgeting, scheduling and quality control within the context of sustainable building projects. Graduates are equipped with skills in sustainable building design, construction management, energy modeling and environmental assessment - skills highly sought after by employers in the construction and engineering sectors.

Work-Integrated Learning
A co-operative education placement (three consecutive work terms, 420 hours each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.
