A Pathway in Humanities and Education is designed to develop strong foundations in design, critical thinking, and research.
In the First Year Pathway students complete the ARU first year of the degree, undertaking the same modules, in the same classes as students entering the University directly. Alongside the ARU modules, students entering through the First Year Pathway will have additional support and tuition from ARU College.
First Year
A First Year pathway is available for students who:
If you fall into any of the above categories, choosing an undergraduate pathway at ARU College is the right decision. Depending on your academic needs here at ARU College we have two pathway entry points available, foundation and first year pathway.
Progressing from First Year
At ARU College we offer a first year or stage 2 level study. Either students will enter this pathway following completion of the foundation, or for students that have completed equivalent of A level study we also have an entry point at first year of a bachelor’s degree.
Upon completion of the first year, or Stage 2, you will seamlessly progress to the second year of your chosen degree with the University, and no longer be registered with ARU College.
BA (Hons) Philosophy
Our education courses take a progressive approach and will teach you transferable skills, relevant across early years, primary teaching and beyond. We’ll help you see the potential in others. Education goes beyond the classroom, and you’ll discover the social issues that impact on children’s and young people’s learning.
Choose a humanities course to learn more about how history has shaped modern times; explore politics, social issues and public services; or tackle the philosophical questions that have captivated humanity for millenia.
At ARU College and ARU, you’ll develop your thinking, while gaining real-life experience through work placements.
Take on the big questions that have mystified humanity since the dawn of consciousness and discover how the greatest minds have tried to answer them on our full-time Philosophy degree in Cambridge. Choose to study abroad for a semester. Learn to use philosophical methods in your everyday life, and develop skills in problem solving and critical thinking for your future career.
Our BA (Hons) Philosophy degree will introduce you to the biggest puzzles that have fascinated humans for centuries. You’ll consider questions such as ‘who are we?’, ‘what can we know?’ and ‘what should we do to lead worthwhile lives?’ - as well as finding out how others have attempted to solve them.
Your studies will provide you with an understanding of the history of the subject, as well as contemporary debates within both the analytic and continental traditions of philosophy, ensuring you graduate with a broad understanding of the subject, while our optional modules will give you the chance to focus on particular areas of interest, such as Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Art, Ethics, Philosophy of Mind or Political Thought.
By studying the ideas and arguments of the major philosophers from the past and the present and engaging in debates with your fellow students, you’ll develop your thinking so it becomes more rigorous, systematic and creative. You’ll also pick up transferable key skills that will be of use throughout your career, including critical analysis, complex problem solving and judgement.
Your studies will be supported by our core team of Philosophy staff, who offer one-to-one personal tutoring and personalised feedback on your assessments (our BA (Hons) Philosophy was voted 1st in the UK for ‘Satisfied with Feedback’ in the Guardian University Guide 2021). You can also join our Philosophy Society, which organises events such as debates, workshops and quizzes.
