Program Overview

A Foundation Year with ARU College is a two trimester course that takes place before your degree at ARU. This means that your degree will take 4 years to complete in total.

Foundation Year in Humanities and Education

Our education courses take a progressive approach and will teach you transferable skills, relevant across early years, primary teaching and beyond. We’ll help you see the potential in others. Education goes beyond the classroom, and you’ll discover the social issues that impact on children’s and young people’s learning.

Keen to shape young children’s futures? Our Early Childhood Studies degree course in Chelmsford is full-time, with a placement option available for extra experience. You’ll explore the world through a child’s eyes in our Early Years Resource Room and unlock your potential. Forge a rewarding career with children and families in a variety of early years settings.Working with young children is hugely rewarding and enormous fun. It can also be very challenging, and it’s a fast-paced sector. We will help you develop the skills, knowledge and qualities needed to deliver a high standard of professional practice in the workplace.

Our modules have been designed to develop your understanding of professional and inclusive practice, supporting both the child and the family. Using theory and practical experiences you will explore current research around key topics including contemporary theories and pedagogical approaches, while building your leadership skills and considering possible careers across the early childhood sector.

On this course you will learn through practice, in our Early Childhood Resource and Research Room and through our optional placement or theoretical modules. Placements are optional and individually tailored to enable you to gain experience in a variety of different types of settings. Whether you decide to go on placement or not, you will have access to additional volunteering and work experience as well as the choice to take part in further professional development training opportunities, enrichment trips, research groups and various early childhood and education events.

Throughout your studies you will be taught by experts in the field of early childhood, using a variety of teaching methods and interactive technology to promote learning, including group activities, class debates and discussion, lectures and seminar sessions, as well as independent learning and study expectations. You will receive regular feedback and personal tutorial support throughout the course to develop both your academic and professional skills. You will also benefit from the research our lecturers are involved in through our Early Childhood Research Group.
Foundation year option
You have the option to study this course as a four-year degree with foundation year. In your first year you'll study with our partner, ARU College, on our Cambridge campus. After that you'll study in Chelmsford.

We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
This course takes into account the Children's Workforce Development Council and the Early Years Professional Framework. It will teach you the skills you need to work effectively in the early childhood sector such as nurseries and pre-schools.
When you graduate, you’ll be able to apply to work in any registered setting in England, without needing to retrain.
On the other hand, you could choose further study, such as a relevant Master’s degree, or a PGCE course which would qualify you as a primary school teacher. With further training, you could also go into educational psychology or social work.

Navitas family bursaries
Value

The bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fee for up to 8 units of study within one program only with a Navitas member institution. The bursary does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also be undertaken and excludes mixed English options. For more Information Click Here

Eligibility

The Family Bursary applies where two or more students from the same family* study at a Navitas institution. The first family member can be studying at a Navitas institution at the same time as the other family members or may have studied at any Navitas institution previously.
The family bursary is granted to the second and subsequent family members who study at a Navitas institution.
The bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fee for one program only with a Navitas member institution. The bursary does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also be undertaken.
For Diploma students, the bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fees for the first attempt at units in the program of study† (excluding mixed English option).
For Certificate students, the bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fee for the first attempt at units in the program of study (excluding mixed English options).
Students must pay the full amount for half their course as shown on their Letter of Offer in order to confirm their place at the Navitas Institution to which they have applied. If the student remains enrolled at the institution, at the end of the week 4 of their first semester, 10% of their tuition fee paid will be credited to the student. The balance of the bursary is credited to the eligible students’s tuition account in the second and subsequent semesters. (The amount credited will be calculated on the actual number of units studied).
The maximum value of the family bursary is 10% of the tuition fees for the first attempt of units in the program of study regardless of the number of family members who have studied with Navitas institutions.
A completed application must be submitted to the Navitas institution together with supporting documents such as a birth certificate or family card.
The General Manager or the Director Finance Administration will approve the award of a family bursary and authorise the accountant to process the relevant adjustments.
