Program Overview

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) STEM degree prepares students to teach science and mathematics in the context of engineering and technology in secondary school settings. Graduates qualify for a professional teaching certificate from the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Certification Branch (TCB), certifying them to teach science and mathematics subjects in any secondary school setting. Graduates often teach in other provinces or territories in Canada and in other countries.

The BEd STEM is an intensive one-year, full-time, 64 credit program that starts in July each year and continues to the end of June in the following year. The program includes foundation courses in education, methods courses, and practica.

Upon graduation from the STEM program, you will have two degrees: the bachelor's degree in science or mathematics required for entry into this program and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree.

Minimum Level of Education Required: To be accepted into this program, applicants must have a four-year Bachelor of Science degree (120 credit hours) or equivalent in mathematics, or science (such as physics, biology, chemistry or general science) with a minimum grade point average of C+ (GPA 2.33) on the most recent 60 credit hours completed.
Within the degree all applicants must have one teachable major or two teachable minors (courses taught in secondary schools).
- A teachable minor consists of 18 credit hours of upper-level courses (numbered 3000 or 4000), in addition to required lower-level courses.
- A teachable major consists of thirty (30) credit hours of upper-level courses (numbered 3000 or 4000) in addition to required lower-level courses.
Successful completion, with a C+ average of six (6) credit hours of acceptable English Literature and Composition at any level. Courses in linguistics, language study, grammar, technical or business writing, communication, or English as a second language are not acceptable to meet the English requirement.
Teaching Experience Requirement - One hundred (100) hours minimum of relevant volunteer or paid teaching experience working with groups of school age students. These hours must be completed prior to admission into the program. It is recommended that a minimum of 25 of these hours be in a middle or secondary-school classroom or environment.

Scholarship	Overview	Eligibility
Diversity Scholarships	TRU offers global diversity scholarships to new international students that demonstrate excellent academics and are from countries that are underrepresented on campus (5 or less on campus). Scholarship will be automatically applied at time of student application if above qualifications are met.	To be considered, students should meet one of the following: 3.0 GPA or 6.5 IELTS or 88 TOEFL iBT. There is no application process.
Academic Excellence Award	If identified, candidates are eligible for up to $2,000. Qualified students will receive first $1,000 then must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA at the completion of their first semester at TRU to be eligible to receive $1,000 for a second semester. This award is for new students only.	To be considered, new students must have a minimum GPA of 86% (A) during last year of high school/college/university. Award candidates will be identified by the international marketing team based on program application submission and contacted directly if deemed eligible.
Exceptional Student Award	If identified, candidates are eligible for up to $4,000. Qualified students will receive first $1,000 then must maintain a minimum 3.33 GPA at the completion of each subsequent semester at TRU to be eligible to receive $1,000 for each additional semester up to 3 semesters. This award is for new students only.	To be considered, new students must have a minimum GPA of 80% (A-) during the last year of high school/college/university and gain direct entry to academic studies (IELTS 6.5+). Award candidates will be identified by the international marketing team based on program application submission and contacted directly if deemed eligible.
