First Year in Engineering, Computing and Technology Leading to Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Quantity Surveying

Program Overview

In the First Year Pathway students complete the ARU first year of the degree, undertaking the same modules, in the same classes as students entering the University directly. Alongside the ARU modules, students entering through the First Year Pathway will have additional support and tuition from ARU College.

First Year in Engineering, Computing and Technology

Students in these disciplines will find it necessary to work confidently in multi-disciplinary teams throughout their careers. A foundation in Engineering, Computing and Technology is structured around projects working with others from different degree programmes, enabling them to begin to develop this extremely important transferable skill.

Develop the knowledge and skills you need to create technologies and applications that will change the world. During your Foundation, you will have opportunities for practical work and experimentation across a range of elements, including engineering design tasks centred on developing simple robots, in order to introduce the challenges and benefits of realising theoretical ideas. There’ll be lectures and seminars combined with work-based learning and plenty of course options to personalise your studies.

BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

Quantity surveyors look after the financial management of construction projects, from concept through to design, build, maintenance and disposal. They play a vital role in deciding whether projects are financially viable. They also provide consultancy services to clients: evaluating the economic feasibility of a project, development costs, procurement options, contractual arrangements and legal constraints.

Construction forms part of our wider environment, economy and society. You’ll explore the scientific, social, legal, technical, ethical, economic and political aspects of the built environment. We’ll help you understand issues such as value for money, health and safety and the environment.

While studying your Quantity Surveying degree course, you will use industry-standard software, and learn to measure and cost a range of construction projects. Guest lecturers will share their experiences and expertise with you, highlighting the latest ideas and issues in quantity surveying.

By the time you graduate from ARU, you’ll have a sound understanding of the demands of professional practice, including how to identify and meet clients’ needs. You’ll also be able to register with RICS and work as a chartered quantity surveyor.
