International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences (2 Semesters), Leading to Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology with Criminology

Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences

The International Foundation Year in Health & Human Sciences will prepare you for a range of degrees in fields related to health, such as physiotherapy, sports science, podiatry and pharmaceutical science. It can also prepare you for studying degrees in behavioural sciences, such as psychology, sociology and criminology.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study - all of which are important for your academic development.

Why study Engineering, Computing & Science?

  • Graduate from the University with a professionally accredited degree – without the years of study required for a degree in medicine
  • Degrees typically include placements, such as clinical practice in local hospitals and NHS trusts, to gain practical experience in a real-world setting
  • Access a range of specialist facilities, including a biomechanics laboratory, formulation lab (for making and testing medicines), physiology labs and physiotherapy practical rooms
  • Early preparation for your future career with support for your NHS interview for clinical practice and integrated CareerAhead activities
  • Benefit from engagement with University departments and local business and employers in advance of starting your degree.

Once you have succesfully completed International Foundation Year in Health & Human Sciences, and achieving the required grades, you will join the first year of your undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield.

Leading to: Psychology with Criminology BSc (Hons)

Perhaps you’re looking to go into a career in forensic psychology in the criminal justice system, or you’re just fascinated by psychology and crime. This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree aims to give you a thorough grounding in both general psychology and criminal psychology, which could be applied to a wide range of situations and careers once you graduate.

On the undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree you’ll have the opportunity to explore some specialist areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and forensic psychology. We’ll help you gain an invaluable insight into what makes people behave the way they do and why they choose to take part in criminal activity.

Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. We’ll give you the opportunity to explore how psychological theory relates to the actions people take in life. You'll look at criminal behaviour and weigh up the different theories about the causes of crime. From parenting to society, peer pressure and genetics, you’ll investigate the potential triggers and assess their importance. The aim is to give you some crucial insights into how psychology is used within the criminal justice system.

How will you learn?

  • Taking a hands-on approach you'll be encouraged to think and apply your knowledge, looking at how theories apply in the real world.
  • All our lecturers are focused on supporting you, and we have a dedicated Transition and Progression Tutor, who will help you adapt to studying Psychology at degree level.
  • Some of our final year optional modules are partly taught by professional clinical and forensic psychologists, giving you the opportunity to learn directly from those in professional practise.
  • Many of our lecturers are members of our Centre for Cognition and Neuroscience, and produce world-leading research in this field, ensuring you will be taught by some people at the cutting-edge of their discipline.
  • We’ll help you broaden your skills and experiences to make you attractive to potential employers in your chosen career. You’ll have the opportunity to build your communication skills, assertiveness, ability to work in teams and presentation techniques, all of which are useful in many careers and professions.
