International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences (2 Semesters), Leading to Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology with Counselling

Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences

The International Foundation Year in Health & Human Sciences will prepare you for a range of degrees in fields related to health, such as physiotherapy, sports science, podiatry and pharmaceutical science. It can also prepare you for studying degrees in behavioural sciences, such as psychology, sociology and criminology.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study - all of which are important for your academic development.

Why study Engineering, Computing & Science?

  • Graduate from the University with a professionally accredited degree – without the years of study required for a degree in medicine
  • Degrees typically include placements, such as clinical practice in local hospitals and NHS trusts, to gain practical experience in a real-world setting
  • Access a range of specialist facilities, including a biomechanics laboratory, formulation lab (for making and testing medicines), physiology labs and physiotherapy practical rooms
  • Early preparation for your future career with support for your NHS interview for clinical practice and integrated CareerAhead activities
  • Benefit from engagement with University departments and local business and employers in advance of starting your degree.

Once you have succesfully completed International Foundation Year in Health & Human Sciences, and achieving the required grades, you will join the first year of your undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield.

Leading to: Psychology with Counselling BSc (Hons)

Everyone has times in their life when they may suffer from personal difficulties. Whether they’ve lost someone close, had an unpleasant experience or even come through illness, they may need to reach out for help and support. This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you build the skills required to help people in need.

This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree aims to give you a unique and invaluable insight into human behaviour. You’ll have the opportunity to use the skills that you’ve developed in a wide range of situations, careers, or further study. We’ll look at the science of mind and behaviour, which is the psychology side of the course, and at the different types of counselling approaches. Cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred, psychodynamic therapy, and others – you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. You’ll also look at the importance of health and wellbeing in day-to-day life, and how to support other people in their everyday lives.

How will you learn?

  • We’ll take a research focus, looking at the theory and practice of counselling and psychology, helping your personal development during the three years.
  • All our lecturers are focused on supporting you, and we have a dedicated Transition and Progression Tutor, who will help you adapt to studying Psychology at degree level.
  • Some of our final year optional modules are partly taught by professional clinical and forensic psychologists, giving you the opportunity to learn directly from those in professional practise.
  • You’ll be guided by specialists in subject areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and counselling psychology.
  • Many of our lecturers are members of our Centre for Cognition and Neuroscience, and produce world-leading research in this field, ensuring you will be taught by some people at the cutting-edge of their discipline.
