International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities

The International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities is designed for international students who aspire to pursue undergraduate degrees in fields related to human sciences and humanities.

The foundation year is taught over two semesters and equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen degree programs. It can prepare you for studying degrees in behavioural sciences, such as psychology, education and criminology.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study - all of which are important for your academic development.

Everyone has times in their life when they may suffer from personal difficulties. Whether they’ve lost someone close, had an unpleasant experience or even come through illness, they may need to reach out for help and support. This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you build the skills required to help people in need.

This undergraduate Psychology BSc (Hons) degree aims to give you a unique and invaluable insight into human behaviour. You’ll have the opportunity to use the skills that you’ve developed in a wide range of situations, careers, or further study. We’ll look at the science of mind and behaviour, which is the psychology side of the course, and at the different types of counselling approaches. Cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred, psychodynamic therapy, and others – you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. You’ll also look at the importance of health and wellbeing in day-to-day life, and how to support other people in their everyday lives.

How will you learn?

  • We’ll take a research focus, looking at the theory and practice of counselling and psychology, helping your personal development during the three years.
  • All our lecturers are focused on supporting you, and we have a dedicated Transition and Progression Tutor, who will help you adapt to studying Psychology at degree level.
  • Some of our final year optional modules are partly taught by professional clinical and forensic psychologists, giving you the opportunity to learn directly from those in professional practise.
  • You’ll be guided by specialists in subject areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and counselling psychology.
  • Many of our lecturers are members of our Centre for Cognition and Neuroscience, and produce world-leading research in this field, ensuring you will be taught by some people at the cutting-edge of their discipline.
