International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities

The International Foundation Year in Human Science and Humanities is designed for international students who aspire to pursue undergraduate degrees in fields related to human sciences and humanities.

The foundation year is taught over two semesters and equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen degree programs. It can prepare you for studying degrees in behavioural sciences, such as psychology, education and criminology.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study - all of which are important for your academic development.

This course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to meet the rapidly expanding and changing environment in health and social care. The course aims to give you the knowledge, understanding and core skills required to pursue a wide range of careers in a variety of statutory or non-statutory, community or residential health and social care settings. Career opportunities for graduates may include working in areas such as drug and alcohol services, housing associations, women’s centres, domestic violence and disability.

Key components of the course involve providing the opportunity for you to develop your skills putting you in a competitive position for both UK and international career opportunities. Integral to the course are personal and professional development, leadership and international perspectives. How will you learn?

  • You’ll be taught different aspects of health and social care, from looking at how to assess needs to being introduced to law, social policy, assessment and care planning.
  • You’ll explore your own values in relation to working with diverse groups, and engage in becoming a reflective practitioner.
  • Taking a hands-on approach you’ll have the opportunity to put your theoretical skills into practice through undertaking a work placement in your third year. This will support and enhance your learning, increase your future employability prospects and give you the chance to make useful contacts in industry so that you can reach your full potential.
  • You’ll be taught by a very supportive and experienced teaching team who have worked in a range of health and social care roles. They’ll use their expertise to bring their teaching to life with real-life case studies.
