Leading to: Software Engineering MEng (Hons)

Today’s digital world is entirely dependent on computer software. Everyday activities such as communicating through social media or booking tickets depend on well-designed and well-developed software that powers information systems. Entire industry sectors, from manufacturing and construction, to healthcare and finance have been transformed through software engineering. This course aims to put you at the forefront of the software engineering discipline, by developing your skills and knowledge across all phases of the software process, from requirements and design, to development, deployment and testing.

Successful software engineers are highly sought after by employers who are looking to maintain or expand their digital activities and rely on robust, sustainable, reliable and user-friendly software that is built according to specification whilst meeting reasonable budget and time constraints. This course has been designed to provide you with a deeper, specialist knowledge of software engineering than the BSc(Hons) version of the course. You’ll study for an extra year with the aim of gaining an MEng qualification. Your extra year of study gives you opportunities for project work and developing pieces of working software, designed to prepare you for a lasting and rewarding career in software development.

The opportunities open to you as a software engineer are forever changing, as industries develop and introduce new innovation. We want to give you the knowledge and skills to succeed in this exciting and fast paced environment. You’ll be able to explore the latest techniques that software developers use. You’ll have the chance to:

  • Explore contemporary methods and techniques in software development
  • Understand the tasks of the modern software engineering process and how they apply to projects of different scales.
  • Develop the flexibility and adaptability you’ll need for a long-term career

During your studies you’ll be able to use the high-standard computing facilities we have on campus, including a range of machines running a variety of operating systems and software. The course emphasis is on guiding you in developing hands-on, practical skills in software development, as well as an understanding of the human and social contexts of software systems.

After your second year you’ll be able to take an optional placement year, where you’ll be able to put into practice some of the techniques you’ve learnt. By gaining some real-world experience, you could make yourself more attractive to employers too. The final year of your MEng course gives you the chance to get involved in project work, and you’ll also study more advanced software development techniques and management topics.
