Money makes the world go round and Economics helps you understand how it all works. It’s a fascinating subject that takes a wide variety of factors into account, and it could lead to an exciting career in all manner of industries too, in the private or public sector.

Economics is the science of decision making. It’s vital in situations where events like changes in the price level of goods or services, or changes in interest rates affect how decisions are made.

That’s why economists study how people, households, firms and governments allocate scarce resources to meet the needs of the population. By studying Economics, you’ll have the chance to understand global problems such as widespread poverty and inequality, high unemployment and rising pollution. You might also be able to tease out some of the solutions too.

How will you learn?

You will learn through practical application and delivered lectures, workshops, seminars and group work sessions.

  • Here at Huddersfield, you’ll be taught by an academic team with a diverse range of academic and professional experience. This ensures that what you’re taught, and how you’re taught, reflects what you need to know now, as well as giving you the resources to understand future trends and practices. Your tutors will help you prepare to thrive in the ever-changing world of economics.
  • The course aims to give you an in-depth study of macro- and microeconomic theories and applications. Macroeconomics covers the importance of aggregate consumption, investment, and what fuels the economic growth. Microeconomics covers sector specific practices such as competition, regulation and government intervention.
  • Throughout the course you'll have the opportunity to study mathematics and statistics for social sciences, and econometrics. The quantitative modules will equip you with the tools used by professional economists to evaluate the impact of economic policies and analyse contemporary economic, financial and business phenomena.
  • During your studies you'll have the opportunity to learn how to use Industry standard databases, such as Datastream, alongside sector leading software packages such as Stata, R and Eviews.

We don’t expect you to be fully versed in economics before your course begins, as we aim to build up your understanding from first principles. We’ll also be looking at how mathematic and statistical tools can be used to analyse economic decisions.
