Social Studies
The International Foundation Year in Social Studies leads to a choice of undergraduate degrees in the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies and the Faculty of Science and Technology. To prepare for your degree, you will study core English language modules and subject modules. Degree options include Philosophy, Sociology, and Film.
You will learn about global issues and contemporary events, including business, culture, politics and environment. Other areas of study include advertising, social media, psychology, and theories that relate to media and modern society.
Politics and International Relations
This degree explores connections between political practice and theory and state and society using examples drawn from the most topical issues of global and local concern. In your first year, the modules Politics in the Modern World and International Relations: Theory and Practice will introduce you to some of the core themes concepts involved in the study of Politics and International Relations. Where possible, you will also be able to follow your own interests, choosing modules in either Politics or International Relations or another subject that complements your degree.
You'll then move on to subjects such as International Relations Security and Sustainability, Politics of Development and Global Changes and Government and Politics of the United States.
In your final year, you can develop your ideas on themes including Britain in the World; United States Foreign Policy since 1945, and Contemporary Issues in the Middle East.
In the second and third year students will be able to choose from a broad range of options, such as Politics and History of the Middle East; International Relations, Security and Sustainability; Politics of Development and Global Changes; Understanding Key Economic Concepts; Issues in Contemporary Politics and Philosophy. Careers
A Politics degree provides you with the opportunity to develop knowledge and transferable skills relevant to a range of different future careers. As a graduate of Politics and International Relations you may be interested in careers such as Teaching, Journalism, Corporate Planning, Civil Service, International charities and International business. We will help you determine your direction and aim to support you in getting there. We do this by offering subject-specific support from academic tutors and careers advisers.
We are home to the Richardson Institute, which undertakes peace and conflict research. In recent years, the Institute has offered around 60 internships per year for students to undertake research projects for external organisations. You can also apply for internships as part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Internship Scheme. Past employers have included Carnegie Publishing, The Dukes Theatre, and the Ethical Consumer Research Association, with roles ranging from marketing and PR to specific research projects with heritage or humanitarian organisations.

There are various options through which a student can get a post study work visa in the UK.
Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa for the graduates with a genuine and credible business idea.
Tier 2 (General) is the leading immigration visa to work in the UK.
Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme is for students who have completed their Ph.D. and is valid for 12 months for them to work, look for work or set up a business.
Tier 5 Youth Mobility is for individuals of certain countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand aged between 18 -30 who wish to move to the UK.
Tier 5 GAE is for individuals who want to come to the UK for work experience, training, research or a fellowship.
UK Ancestry is for individuals who are a citizen of a commonwealth and plan to work in the UK and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
