Master of Kinesiology (Practicum-Based)

Program Overview

Master of Kinesiology students develop broad knowledge and skills in movement science settings, such as physical and neurorehabilitation, strength and conditioning, occupational training and testing, and exercise training for older adults.

Students complete eight core classes and two professional practicum (internship) placements. Each practicum provides students with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in areas consistent with their career objectives and interests, the chance to enhance and expand their clinical and applied movement skill sets, and the understanding and conceptualization of professionalism in the movement sciences field.

Completing your practicum placements allows you to:

Enhance your clinical and applied skill sets
Gain knowledge and experience in working with individuals and groups in a structured program setting
Share new and updated concepts of development, implementation, and evaluation of services with external agencies and partners

Students complete two professional practicum placements. The first practicum is completed within the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies where students can engage in different movement science services. For the second practicum, students must identify and secure a supervised setting in the community where they can apply their movement science knowledge.

The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies offers community-focused, science-based movement programs in which Master of Kinesiology students can complete their first professional practicum. Our programs include:

Enrich Neurorehab is an adaptive fitness and rehabilitation program for adults with neurological conditions.
URGold is a supervised circuit training class for adults with one controlled health condition.
Athlete Health and Performance Initiative offers strength and conditioning training, treatment of athletic injuries, and nutrition advice to elite athletes.
Rock Steady Boxing is an exercise program designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

We also provide occupational training and testing for a number of human service professions, including police officers, EMS workers, corrections officers, conservation officers, firefighters, highway patrol officers, and the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Our faculty members have expertise in a range of movement science disciplines directly related to the course content in the Master of Kinesiology program. Faculty members also have active research profiles and bring timely and relevant research expertise into the classroom to benefit their students.

Entrance Awards

All international undergraduate students who apply for admission to an undergraduate degree program are automatically considered for these scholarships based on their admission average—no application is required!

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS	VALUE	CRITERIA
International Entrance Scholarship	$3,000	All international students applying to an undergraduate degree program will be automatically considered. Students must have an admission average of at least 85%. Students receive their choice of either $3,000 in tuition or housing credit.
International Student of Distinction Scholarship: Tier 1	$80,000 ($20,000 x 4 years) Approximate Value	All international students applying to an undergraduate degree program directly from high school will be automatically considered. International students selected for Tier 1 will be awarded free on-campus housing and a meal plan. Students must have a minimum early conditional or overall final high school average of 90% (converted to Canadian grading scale). This award is renewable each year of a student’s degree program as long as students continue to complete 30 credit hours per calendar year and maintain a minimum UGPA of 75% in their first year and 80% in their subsequent years.
International Student of Distinction Scholarship: Tier 2	$40,000 ($10,000 x 4 years) Approximate Value	All international students applying to an undergraduate degree program directly from high school will be automatically considered. International students selected for Tier 2 will be awarded free on-campus housing. Students must have a minimum early conditional or overall final high school average of 85-89.99% (converted to Canadian grading scale). This award is renewable each year of a student’s degree program as long as students continue to complete 30 credit hours per calendar year and maintain a minimum UGPA of 75% in their first year and 80% in their subsequent years.
International Student of Distinction Scholarship: Diploma	$20,000 ($10,000 x 2 years) Approximate Value	All international students applying for the Fall intake to an undergraduate diploma program directly from high school will be automatically considered. International students selected for the Diploma category will be awarded free on-campus housing. Students must have a minimum early conditional or overall final high school average of 90% (converted to Canadian grading scale). This award is renewable for one year as long as students complete 30 credit hours in the calendar year from the semester they begin and maintain a minimum UGPA of 80%. To be considered for the Diploma category students must apply for the Fall intake and have their application submitted by April 30.
Bursary	$20,000 ($5,000 x 4 years) Tuition Credit Students can receive a tuition credit of up to $20,000 over 4 years. This is a savings of approximately 20% of the total degree cost!	This bursary is available to new international undergraduate students admitted to the Winter 2026 term onwards. Students do not need to apply for this bursary. The UR International office will assess and notify all eligible students each term. Must be an international student admitted to a 4-year undergraduate degree program. Students must deposit payment of two years tuition to the University of Regina. The amount required is according to the one year tuition fee stated on the student's acceptance letter. (Example $27,000 CAD x 2 years= $54,000 CAD). The deposit should be made in advance of applying for the study permit. Students must complete their first year (3 terms) of full-time study at the University of Regina and register in the following academic term. Students will receive a $5,000 tuition credit to their student financial account once the above conditions are met. The tuition credit will be issued after the add/drop date of the assessment term has passed. Note that the tuition credit will not be issued until after the student completes their first year of studies.
Bursary Renewal		If a student meets the conditions outlined above, they can continue to receive the $5,000 bursary each year of their studies as long as they Completed full-time studies in the preceding year. Are currently registered for the next academic term. Are not owing any tuition fees to the University of Regina.

A student becomes eligible to apply for scholarships and funding once they have received an official decision letter and been accepted into a program at the University of Regina. Other eligibility criteria may apply. Students may receive funding for certain projects or may possibly receive paid employment through the university.
