University Foundation in Engineering, AI and Robotics (Two -Semester) Leading to Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Motorsport Technology

Program Overview

University Foundation in Engineering and Technology Stage1 at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is designed to prepare you for entry to university-level program. During Stage 1 you will complete a range of modules relevant to your chosen degree, as well as modules concentrating on the skills that are vital for University level education such as Critical Thinking.

A Foundation pathway is available for students who:

  • Don’t meet the entry requirements to enter university level study directly (but hold GCSE level qualifications)
  • Feel that additional support at the start of university studies will help them stand a better chance of success
  • Have been away from studies for a period of time
  • Come from a different academic environment to that of the UK
  • Require additional English language training

If you fall into any of the above categories, choosing an undergraduate pathway at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is the right decision. Depending on your academic needs here at Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

Progressing from Foundation

Stage 1 will be the first stage in the 4 stage process. Meaning that on successful completion of stage 1 you will seamlessly progress to stage 2, which is the first year of a bachelor’s degree. There is no need to reapply, you will simply just progress between each stage until you reach the final stage and graduate with a degree from Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

BSc (Hons) Motorsport Technology

  • This BSc Honours degree course in Motorsport Technology is part of a suite of automotive related degree courses
  • Involvement in Formula Student Competition from year 1 - design, build and race single-seater race car
  • Excellent facilities in automotive engineering technology
  • World Class Expertise NB materials, vehicle dynamics, structural analysis, aerodynamics and CAE
  • Our BSc Motorsport Technology students have previously completed work placement years at companies including: VW Racing, Hyperion Motor Racing, and RP Aero Systems
  • Recent Automotive Technology graduates have gone on to work at organisations including: Mercedes Benz, Vantage Engineering, and Bentley Motors
  • You do not need an A-level in Mathematics or Physics to gain entry to this course, you simply need the correct UCAS points and your enthusiasm for the subject

What's the course about?

  • Excitement, international travel and working in a high- performing team to achieve success are just some of the major attractions of motorsport. It’s an industry that allows you to work at the cutting edge of automotive technology. This course will give you the skills necessary to support motorsport engineers as they push the boundaries and strive for optimum vehicle performance. Benefiting from world-class expertise and facilities, you’ll study a wide range of modules, including the fundamentals of vehicle and engine design, as well as high-tech computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques. You’ll also have the unique chance to work with engineering students in designing, building and racing a Formula Student race car.

What will I study?

  • The School has a reputation for innovation in teaching and learning with most modules delivered through a combination of traditional face to face teaching and distance learning through the university's StudyNet web based facility. StudyNet allows students to access electronic learning resources, electronic discussion with staff and other students, and, for some modules, submit coursework 24/7 from anywhere in the world! With a heavy emphasis on Computer Aided Engineering, the school has a policy of using industrial standard software wherever possible. The School also operate an open access laboratory policy of when possible students doing experiments in their own time.

More about the Course

  • Motorsport is not just exciting entertainment, but also an important part of the development side of the automotive industry.  The competitiveness of the sport drives engineers to develop innovative ideas and take advantage of up and coming technologies that, if successful, could be employed across the main automotive industry in future.  This course will give you the combination of skills necessary to support motorsport engineers as they strive for efficiency and optimum performance in their vehicle design.
  • First year
    • You will gain a good grounding in engineering, covering technology, information technology and management. You're also introduced to fundamentals of vehicle design covering engines, powertrain, body, steering, suspension and vehicle systems, and will study the structure of the automotive industry.
  • Second year
    • You will extend your knowledge of core technologies, IT and business skills as they are applied within the automotive sector. This includes vehicle design, and the factors that influence it, together with vehicle aerodynamics including wind tunnel testing. You will develop IT expertise in CAD and CAM, simulation and analysis techniques. You will also have the opportunity to be involved with the Class 200 Formula Student car, developing the previous year's Formula Student entry.
  • Final year
    • You will focus on the application of motorsport technology. You will study automotive body engineering, chassis, powertrain technology, aerodynamics and engine design for motorsport, as well as the engineering aspects most closely associated with racing. A vehicle design project fosters team capabilities that employer's value, and you will have the chance to develop more specialist knowledge by exploring a topic that particularly interests you. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the development of the University's entry to the Formula Student competition.
