This combined degree option for high-achieving students gives you the opportunity to combine your Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), allowing you to graduate as an industry-ready engineer with two Honours degrees in under six years, and set yourself up for an exciting and varied career pairing engineering with another passion – whatever that may be!

Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Biochemists and molecular biologists are interested in the molecular functions of all living organisms, from the smallest bacterium to the largest whale. In this major, you'll study the way molecules are organised and how they interact to achieve the functions of the living cell and that of the organism. Your investigations consider the information stored in DNA, molecular interactions, and how organisms gain and use energy. The major provides insights into the mechanisms of evolution, growth, development, reproduction and disease, plus the tools to improve our quality of life. This may be through the development of a drug or drought-resistant crop plant or understanding what controls an individual's health. At the end of the major you'll understand the theoretical basis of biochemistry and molecular biology and demonstrate critical analysis and the application of scientific method to biochemical problems. You will have solid technical competency in basic laboratory skills including solution preparation, qualitative and quantitative analytical methods, and operation of general laboratory equipment. As well as careers in academic, medical and agricultural research, graduates with a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are equipped for careers in patent law, scientific equipment sales, management of clinical trials, forensic science and many others.

Have received an offer for an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate course for 2026 at The University of Western Australia
Have achieved an equivalent:
- Minimum ATAR 85.00; or
- Minimum WAM 65.00
- If studying an approved International Academic Pathway (Articulation Program), students must have achieved a WAM equivalent of more than 75.00

All Combined Bachelor’s and Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are considered eligible.

Whilst most of these degrees are over four years (based on 8 semesters of full time study), the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce; and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science; are over five years (based on 10 semesters of full time study) and as such, eligible students will receive up to $60,000* over five years (yearly eligible amounts based on WAM).

Students who have completed their studies in Australia can apply for a Post Study Work Permit or a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) to continue working in Australia post the completion of their study programs. As an international student, one can apply for the visa but not later than six months after completing your course. But to be eligible, you must meet the Australian Study Requirements, which include a minimum of 16 months of stay in Australia and a completing 92 weeks of a course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
