Medicine is one of today's most fulfilling and in-demand careers. At Central Michigan University, you'll get the hands-on experience you need to provide the best possible care for your patients.
Why This Program & What You'll Learn
Our curriculum is based on self-directed learning methods that will prepare you to practice medicine and help you develop lifelong learning skills.
Your first two years will take place on the CMU Mount Pleasant campus. You'll learn the basic science to practice medicine through a series of integrated, interdisciplinary curricular blocks during the pre-clerkship curriculum. Each block features a variety of learning styles including small groups, case-based discussions, interactive team-based learning, active lectures and lab experiences.
You'll also participate in a clinical skills course, where you'll learn to perform exams, document patient encounters, and communicate effectively with patients.
During third and fourth years your base will be our Saginaw campus. In your third year you'll participate in five required hospital-based clerkships and an integrated clerkship in primary care. Your fourth year will be flexible and give you the opportunity to explore electives and complete a required sub-internship and emergency medicine rotation.
You’ll also have extensive opportunities to conduct medical research. Research is an important part of our mission, and our faculty scholars are pursuing projects that will contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine. From diabetes and heart disease to cancer and opioid abuse, we’re tackling some of the world’s most pressing medical problems.
The College of Medicine is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and our medical simulation centers are accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
