The demand for data expertise isn’t just rising—it’s accelerating. A Ph.D. in statistics from CMU puts you at the forefront of that momentum. You'll train in analytics, computing and actuarial science while preparing for roles in research, teaching, healthcare, finance tech and more.
Why pursue our Ph.D. in statistics?
You’ll build a strong foundation in statistical theory, data analytics, computing and applied methodologies—skills used in everything from healthcare and finance to education and public policy.
As part of the program, you’ll complete an internship tailored to your goals: a teaching internship for those pursuing academic careers or a professional internship for those entering industry or research-driven roles outside higher education.
You’ll also have the opportunity to teach undergraduate statistics or mathematics as a graduate assistant. Most Ph.D. students receive a tuition waiver and stipend through these assistantships, with funding available for up to six years.
After completing your coursework and passing two qualifying exams, you’ll begin your dissertation—guided by a faculty advisor and focused on original research in your area of interest.
