Study substances, both natural and man-made, and make them better with materials chemistry. This branch of science examines:
As a materials chemistry student, you'll engage in hands-on research and work one-on-one with your professors on a capstone project. We're the only public university in Michigan to have a required capstone research experience for chemistry majors. Your research could even lead to publication in a peer-reviewed journal or conference presentations. You'll graduate with a leg up in the job market and in graduate school applications.
Why study materials chemistry?
Like all chemistry majors, you'll begin your studies with core courses in science and math. Then, you'll specialize with a materials chemistry concentration for more advanced topics.
You'll study chemical properties of different materials and use that knowledge to improve existing materials or create brand new ones. You'll also learn about the development of pharmaceuticals and the future of biomimetics.
Throughout your studies, you'll have opportunities to engage in hands-on research. You'll complete a capstone project, where you'll work directly with a faculty mentor to conduct research, write a thesis and present your findings.
Whether you're looking to pursue an advanced degree, or a career after graduation, you'll have the knowledge and the skills to succeed.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
