Program Overview

In our chemistry major's chemical technology focus, you'll build strong lab skills and get ready for jobs in chemical, medicine and biotech industries. You'll learn about how molecules are structured, how new materials are made and how to create and separate compounds.

In a series of hands-on labs, you'll use modern tools to study structures and search complex databases. Your experience working with state-of-the-art equipment and leading research projects means you'll be well-prepared to start your career in chemistry technology.

Why study chemical technology
Our program includes basic courses, research projects, math, physics, electives and advanced courses like analytical chemistry and biochemistry lab.

Your first courses will cover the basics, like how matter behaves, how chemicals react, how molecules bond and other key ideas. You'll also study the structure of matter, the energy used in reactions, how fast some reaction happen and topics like acids and bases.

In organic chemistry, you'll study common reactions with hydrocarbons and how light interacts with molecules. You'll study the reactions of complex molecules, including those found in living things. Then, in biochemistry, you'll focus on the role of proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, fats, amino acids and DNA processing.

All students take part in undergraduate capstone research. Since 1964, this program has paired students with faculty to work on real research projects. Many students have even published their work or presented it at national conferences!

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
