You'll conduct independent research alongside skilled faculty while building the skills to pursue advanced study in mathematics, teach at a community college or perform jobs requiring high-level math.
Why Earn a Master's in Mathematics?
Demand for mathematicians is soaring. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in the field is expected to grow 33 percent by 2030. Most will go to graduates of master's programs in the field.
Many of those jobs are in the federal government and industry. The explosive growth is driven by data and the ongoing search for what those numbers mean. Retailers, for example, use data to determine which goods to put on shelves, and in which stores. And public health agencies use data to keep people safe from disease and illness.
As a graduate with a master's in mathematics, you'll be able to help organizations put their data to work, while devising ways to solve new problems as well.
Why Earn a Master's in Mathematics at CSUN?
Study With Leading Experts
CSUN mathematics faculty conduct leading-edge research funded by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), Simons Foundation, NASA and the Department of Defense, as well as private industry. As a grad student, you'll have the opportunity to participate in that work.
Go On to Big Things
More than 40 percent of our master's graduates continue their studies at Ph.D. programs. The rest go on to work in government or industry positions, or teach at the community college level.
Lifetime Support
The support you get after your academic career can be as important as the help you receive to make it happen. Many CSUN students qualify for financial assistance such as tuition fee waivers, and paid positions as teaching associates or graduate and research assistants.
And CSUN's Industrial Math Group provides valuable career and networking assistance, helping grad students find internships and jobs.
Work. And Study.
All graduate classes are held in the evening, so you can continue to work during the day.
What You'll Learn
You'll tailor the master's degree in mathematics to your interests. Whether you select a path in pure mathematics or applied mathematics, or pursue our new option in statistics, you'll graduate with the tools to excel in the field.
All students are required to take courses in topology and real analysis, and complete work in analytic foundations, linear/algebraic methods and advanced analytic methods. You'll complete either a thesis or comprehensive exam.
Statistics
Prepare for entry-level positions in industry and government, or for future graduate work in applied mathematics.
