Electrical engineers design the systems that keep our world running. If you enjoy using math and science to solve real-world problems, consider an electrical engineering degree.
Why Major in Electrical Engineering?
In today's digital age, electricity truly keeps the world running. From the basics of maintaining our homes to the more complex systems of technology that run our cities and towns.
Electrical engineers design everything from the nation’s power grid to the microchips inside our cell phones.
Graduates can find work in virtually every industry. Major employers include:
Why Study Electrical Engineering at CSUN?
Skilled Faculty
You'll work alongside professors who may be designing medical instrumentation for health care, designing microcontroller-based applications, developing satellite communications systems or working on innovations in electrical power systems.
State-of-the-art Facilities
You'll collaborate with faculty on joint professional projects in the department’s state-of-the-art labs, each equipped with industry-standard technology and software packages.
Hands-on Experience
The department's practical approach to engineering offers hands-on design experience as well as theoretical knowledge. You'll take part in the department's senior design program, modeled on the industry work groups you'll encounter on the job. You'll design and develop a project, from conception through manufacture, gaining valuable experience working as part of a team. Examples of such team projects include antennas for satellites, drones, CleanBot and solar-powered aircraft.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
