Children's nursing is a rewarding career involving caring for new-born babies in intensive care to looking after young people, whilst offering support to family members. The care they provide can span across a wide range of needs from the sick new-born baby to the young person who has a chronic disease. Wherever children require care, including their home, school, a residential setting or in hospital.
WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The field of Children & Young Peoples nursing enables you to develop the knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective nursing care to children and young people. This enables you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a registered Child Nurse in a variety of health care settings. It will educate you to a high clinical, professional and academic standard ready to practice in the 21st century. This is a professional vocational award that carefully integrates theory and practice, with 50% of the programme delivered in practice and 50% within the University.
Nursing is a demanding vocation which requires hard work, commitment, the ability to problem solve, work independently and as part of a team.
What happens on the course?
In order to meet all of the requirements to register as a nurse you will need to fulfil a set number of hours of study which are compulsory this course has been specially designed to provide you with the opportunity to fulfill the requisite number of hours. These have been agreed as 4600 hours in three years. 50% of your course will be situated in the University and 50% in a variety of practice areas.
Some academic modules will be core modules which will mean all students will study together, and some are field specific which relate entirely to children and young people's nursing. In practice students attend a wide range of placements enabling them to care for children and young people with different conditions. At the end of the third year you may opt to undertake a placement overseas.The modules will contain a range of key skills which are essential for successful lifelong learning in healthcare including communication, information computing technology, application of number, working with others, problem solving and how to improve your learning. With a variety of teaching and learning approaches available, this course will help you to develop the skills required to work within, and respond to the healthcare needs of children & young people in a variety of settings.
The Children & Young Peoples Nursing course is provided by a range of specialist lecturers who are committed to upholding the rights of children and young people, to achieve high levels of quality health care through the education and development of student nurses. Ultimately we are committed to developing nurses who can work with children and young people across a range of different health & social care environments as well as contributing to care and interventions from other providers such as social care, education and youth justice.
Placements will be undertaken with one of five NHS Trusts; The Royal Wolverhampton Trust, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, most recently Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, or in private health organisations.

Those meeting the entry requirements may be shortlisted for a values-based selection process and will be subsequently required to meet a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and Occupational Health requirements.

During the Nursing course you will be required to attend placements. When you are asked for your choice of placement area we will endeavour to meet your request however we must emphasise that this cannot be guaranteed and therefore you must ensure you are able to travel to the final placement area you are allocated.
If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The charge for this will be a DBS fee of £40.00 and a £6.00 ID check service fee. You will also need to complete an occupational health assessment questionnaire and General Practitioner Form prior to starting the course; vaccinations will also need to be up-to-date.
