Master of Science in Psychological Therapies with Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner

Program Overview

This unique MSc course allows you to train as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and qualify for paid employment with an NHS Talking Therapies service. You’ll develop skills in assessing and treating depression and anxiety, with opportunities to engage in master's-level research or specialised mental health modules.

This is a master’s level course comprised of two components: clinical training and a research/taught component.

The clinical training aspect of the course focuses on helping you develop skills in assessment and treatment of patients with common mental health problems through three comprehensive modules in low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (LICBT).

The clinical component is supplemented by a placement in the University’s innovative Health and Well-Being Clinic, allowing you to apply the skills learned in lectures under the supervision of a qualified clinical supervisor.

There are two routes through this programme, meaning the second component is either the completion of a dissertation module or two specialist modules relevant to working in a Talking Therapies service. The dissertation route will give you the opportunity to work with a supervisor to produce an original thesis.

The specialist modules, ‘Leadership in Talking Therapies’ and ‘Working with Long-Term Health Conditions’ will give you the knowledge and skills to progress within your future employment as a PWP.

Both routes will provide you with a solid research foundation and expand your knowledge of mental health and applied psychology.

Who is this course for ?

This makes the programme an ideal first step towards a career in cognitive behavioural therapy, or for those students who are eligible for GBC with the British Psychological Society, further training in clinical psychology, or counselling psychology.
