Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) (Top-Up)

Program Overview

If you already have a nursing or midwifery qualification, our course is designed to help you specialise as a specialist community public health nurse in the role of Health Visitor or School Nurse.

As part of the course, you’ll develop the skills you need to work with children, young people and families at home, in schools and at community level and to influence policy.

Our course has full UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation. Only 25% of specialist community public health nursing courses in UK universities have gained this prestigious award which is recognised by the Department of Health, NICE and World Health Organization as a standard of quality and effectiveness.

Join our supportive nursing community in Cambridge, and top-up your existing qualifications to a full honours degree in one year.

With the support of our expert tutors, you’ll gain a strong foundation of knowledge needed to support families with all aspects of infant feeding including Breastfeeding and relationship building and you’ll learn how to improve children’s health and reduce health inequalities. The UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative is designed to enable public services to better support families with infant feeding and developing close and loving relationships, ensuring that all babies get the best possible start in life.

You’ll build your knowledge, skills and experience on campus in Cambridge or Chelmsford, on a range of practice placements, and by using innovative learning methods such as our Virtual Learning Environment.

Our Specialist Community Public Health Nursing degree has been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and meets their professional standards for Part 3 registration. When you graduate, you’ll be able to register to prescribe from the community practitioners’ formulary.

As this course is work-based, it’s open to UK and EU students only.

Applications should be made through NHS Jobs. Local community providers such as Virgin Care, Cambridge Community Services, Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, North East London Foundation Trust, and Southend on Sea Borough Council will all release jobs for ‘Student Health Visitor’ or ‘Student School Nurse’ or ‘Student SCPHN’ positions. Once your application is successful you’ll be registered on our course at ARU.
