Program Overview

Earthquakes, wildfires and epidemics are just some of the reasons, and epidemics are just some of the reasons that qualified, trained emergency management professionals are needed around the world. York is the only university in Canada to offer a robust education with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Disaster & Emergency Management, and it is a place where you’ll learn to better understand and mitigate potential disasters.

In this highly specialized program, students examine topics such as business continuity planning, emergency and disaster risk management, crisis communications, disaster ethics and terrorism-related issues.

Our respected, internationally recognized faculty are all actively engaged in cutting-edge in  research and bring that timely knowledge into the classroom. You’ll also benefit from networking opportunities and connections towith world-class experts through conferences, events and a the popular field- placement course and conferences and networking by virtue of being in the largest city in the country. Some courses are taught by practitioners working in the field, such as local emergency managers.

Our graduates are involved in emergency management, public safety, healthcare,  and consultancy within governments, multinational companies, the insurance industry, humanitarian organizations and NGOs.

  • Train for disasters virtually using Second Life and Virtual Reality tools in the Advanced Disaster, Emergency and Rapid Response Simulation (ADERSIM).
  • Work with our student association, UDEM and take advantage of offers external training, exercises and networking opportunities throughout the year, and be a part of your campus community.
