Integrated Year 1 Undergraduate Program

Program Overview

The Integrated Year 1 Undergraduate Program is a unique opportunity for students to directly enter their first year of undergraduate studies at York University while improving their English language skills and Canadian cultural awareness. This program extends unconditional admission to students who meet the academic requirements for admission to a York undergraduate program with an IELTS score between 5.5 and 6.0 or its equivalent.

Over the Fall and Winter terms of the first year of their undergraduate program, students will work towards completing 24 and up to 30 credits across three academic components:

  • The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS): For-credit General Education English as a Second Language courses focused on improving a student’s ability to communicate concepts and ideas and critical thinking within a Canadian academic context.
  • Faculty Credit Courses: First-year-level, credit-bearing courses for students who are seeking to study in specific fields.
  • The School of Continuing Studies’ English Language Institute: Up to 10 hours per week of non-credit English Language courses aimed at improving language proficiency in preparation for the second year of study and beyond.

Students will enjoy an authentic university learning experience where they will engage with the general York student body, enjoy the vibrant campus culture and take specialized language courses. This ensures their language development and academic progress are strong enough to transition into the second year of undergraduate studies at York University.
