As a communication sciences & disorders major at USD, you will learn to help people with a wide range of communication disorders such as stuttering, hearing loss or problems with swallowing or balance. Here you will take your first steps to becoming a speech-language pathologist or audiologist who assists individuals of all ages with a variety of communication disorders. For those who do not wish to continue to graduate school, the undergraduate program prepares you for careers in laboratory research, administration or clinical assistant work.

Communication Sciences and Disorders
A degree in communication sciences & disorders lays the groundwork for careers in speech-language pathology, audiology, special education and other health fields. As a STEM discipline, communication sciences & disorders prepares graduates with skills needed for high-demand professions in the nation and region.
Our graduate program in speech-language pathology allows students who have earned a bachelor's degree in communication sciences & disorders (at USD or elsewhere) to participate in an advanced track concentration curriculum. This will reduce credits required for an M.A. from the standard 78 credit hours to 60.

Minimum Level of Education Required: To be accepted into this program, applicants must have Grade 12 / High School Diploma.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
