Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy, Ethics and Religion

Program Overview

You’ll join a welcoming, supportive, close-knit community, and a team of engaging staff who are dedicated to developing your academic and personal potential. Examining worldviews and traditions that shape contemporary identities, and their impact on society, we will encourage you to explore key questions about human experience and existence.

Our staff specialise in diverse fields such as religious extremism, ethics, gender and identification, aesthetics and psychology, and interfaith dialogues. Interests span a host of ethical approaches, from queer and feminist ethics to religious ethics, and normative ethical traditions. We engage with worldwide religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Haitian Voodoo, Satanism, Paganism, and Native American Spirituality. Placing philosophical methodologies at the core, we offer key insights into significant areas of research and discussion, within and outside of academia.

The University has engaged with many philosophers over the decades, such as Sir Henry Jones, who studied at Bangor and specialised in the philosophy of idealism. Our links with ethics are evident not only based on the number of religious figures who have chosen to study here, but also the variety of religious affiliations, such as Christianity, Judaism, and Baha’i.

Bangor Cathedral is the longest Anglican establishment to have continuous worship for nearly 1,500 years. Also in Bangor are many other Christian places of worship, as well as a Muslim community centre and historical Jewish establishments. On Anglesey, the prehistoric burial ground and Neolithic chambered tomb of Bryn Celli Ddu is a popular location for followers of Paganism and is one of the spiritual homes of the Anglesey Druid Order.

In addition to a range of transferrable skills, such as critical thinking, analysis, logic and reason, this degree will prove valuable in your personal and professional life. The breadth of topics encourages you to be reflective and respectful towards diverse cultures and varying attitudes and opinions.
