Illinois Tech’s Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering is a course-only, professionally oriented degree program aimed at broadening student potential, enhancing technical versatility, and in some instances providing the opportunity for changes in career path. This program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop and improve materials that impact everyday life.
Our Energy/Environment/Economics (E3) specialization provides further focus in a specialized area of energy extraction, conversion, or utilization, and a broad knowledge base about different energy sources; environmental issues related to energy extraction, conversion, and utilization; and the impact of industrial ecology principles on the design and operation of energy systems.
Each student will have the opportunity to develop a program that reflects their professional goals and interests in consultation with an adviser from the Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering.

Our graduate Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering program with E3 specialization will prepare you for such careers as:
Illinois Tech has several of its own competitive scholarship programs that are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. All domestic undergraduate first-year and transfer students are automatically considered for scholarships that cover a generous portion of expenses such as tuition. Graduate students in select degree programs also may be considered for additional special scholarships, beyond any fellowships that they may receive.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
