Illinois Tech offers a small, caring faculty giving personal attention to shape a degree suited for different needs, especially through the program's specializations. The M.S. in biology opens possibilities in industry, business, law, policy, administration, or research, either as a terminal degree or as preparation for a Ph.D.

The thesis option is designed as preparation for a career as an experimental biologists in academia, government, or industry, as well as a path to a Ph.D. This option is available on a competitive basis.
The non-thesis option is intended as a degree to meet the needs of science administrators, policymakers, patent attorneys, and others. A library research project or a laboratory research project is required to complete the program.

Career Opportunities
An advanced degree in biology opens up job possibilities in a number of specialized and higher-paying jobs.
Illinois Tech has several of its own competitive scholarship programs that are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. All domestic undergraduate first-year and transfer students are automatically considered for scholarships that cover a generous portion of expenses such as tuition. Graduate students in select degree programs also may be considered for additional special scholarships, beyond any fellowships that they may receive.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
