Prepare to head into a career in a multitude of areas, or to enter into a graduate program in physics, engineering, and many other non-physics related fields. College Board sums up this degree in one word: flexibility.
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics degree at Illinois Tech provides an option if you have a strong affinity for physics, but wish to pursue a career in application of basic scientific principles to the design of equipment. Electronic and electro-mechanical systems for use in measurements, communications, and data acquisition all rely on principles of applied physics. Explore newly developing areas of physics, high technology, instrumentation, and communications at Chicago’s only tech-focused university. A B.S. in applied physics provides a solid physics background, while allowing significant engineering or other technical concentrations.
Program Overview
Applied physics combines research in physics with problem-solving knowledge to prepare for a career applying basic scientific principles into designs of equipment. All domestic undergraduate first-year and transfer students are automatically considered for scholarships that cover a generous portion of expenses such as tuition. Graduate students in select degree programs also may be considered for additional special scholarships, beyond any fellowships that they may receive.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
