Post-Diploma Certificate in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (2nd Discipline)

Program Overview

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologists operate medical diagnostic equipment that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create images of almost every part of the human body without the use of harmful radiation. The MRI 2nd Discipline Program is an online, part-time certificate program that complements students' previous study in Medical Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Combined Laboratory and X-ray, or Ultrasound. Utilizing state-of-the-art MRI simulation software, students will have the opportunity to practice and simulate real-life MRI scanning exams and image analysis.

There are three (3) program intakes per year - January, May, and September. This competency-based program can be completed in as little as four (5) semesters, with the average student completing the program in two years. Students are strongly advised to complete all required courses within a three (3) year period to increase their chances of successfully passing the National Certification exam. The didactic courses in the program are completed entirely online, allowing students the flexibility to learn at their own pace. Students can enroll in one or two courses each semester but need to be aware that some courses must be taken in sequence.

Clinical sites are located throughout Canada. Relocation may be necessary if a clinical site in your area is not available. Room and board plus incidental expenses are the student's responsibility. Alberta clinical placements are limited, and there are currently no clinical training placements available within Edmonton.

After graduation, students are eligible to write the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and/or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) MRI National certification exams. This certification qualifies graduates to work across Canada and/or the United States, and it allows MRI technologists to apply for registration with provincial regulatory bodies such as the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT).
