Bachelor of Kinesiology

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Kinesiology degree provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human movement that includes both the art (e.g., psychology, sociology, history) and science (e.g., physiology, motor learning and control, biomechanics) of human movement as it relates to exercise science, athletic performance and promotion of long term health outcomes. In this program students select one of the following majors, enabling them to focus their learning in senior courses according to a specialized area of interest:

Adapted Physical Activity:
- provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to facilitate physically active lifestyles for people with impairments.
Physical Activity and Health:
- provides students with an understanding of and appreciation for the importance of physical activity as it relates to health, fitness, and well-being over the lifespan. Biopsychosocial factors influencing acquisition and maintenance of physical activity and health will be emphasized.
Sport Performance:
- provides students with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the multifaceted aspects of sport performance.
Sport Coaching:
- provides students with a range of knowledge and experiences to become a competent practicing sport coach. Theories and areas of practice covered include the scientific, social scientific and pedagogical aspects of coaching. Clear links will be made to real-life coaching scenarios with a focus on understanding the integrated and complex nature of coaching and all that underlies the practice of quality sport coaching.
Individualized Major(self-designed)
- this major affords students the opportunity to design a combination or collection of courses that meets their individual interests and needs, provided that an opportunity to pursue their area of interest is not available through the other four majors. It may also enable students who choose to spend one term or year abroad an opportunity to design a major area of study around their international courses. This must be done in consultation with an Undergraduate Programs Advisor and requires approval of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs).

Career opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor of Kinesiology include Kinesiologist, Exercise and Fitness Specialist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Coach or further study in areas such as Medicine, Physical Therapy or Athletic Therapy.

Students are automatically evaluated for the following three scholarships and may receive all three. Funding is limited and early application for admission is encouraged.

Students with a superior admission average and demonstrated leadership qualities entering their first year of an undergraduate degree on a Student Visa Permit could receive up to $120,000 CAD (payable over 4 years).	Students with a superior admission average and self-declared financial need entering their first year of an undergraduate degree on a Student Visa Permit who are Chinese or Hong Kong citizens could receive up to $100,000 (payable over 4 years).	Well-rounded leaders with superior academics may receive up to $15,000 CAD.	Students with superior academic achievement entering any year of an undergraduate degree program at Augustana Faculty on a Student Visa Permit could receive up to $56,000 (payable over 4 years). Selection is based on academic standing with preference given to students with indicated financial need.

Scholarships requiring a Separate Application

President’s International Distinction Scholarship	International Leadership Scholarship
This scholarship is worth $120,000 and awarded in $30,000 installments over 4 years. It is intended to attract top student leaders to the University of Alberta and at least 25 of these scholarships will be awarded for Fall 2025.	This scholarship is also intended for top students who are leaders in their community. It is a one-time entrance award worth up to $15,000.
