The Sustainable Bioproducts field is concerned with extending our knowledge of wood as a material and applying this knowledge to the manufacture of useful products. It requires knowledge of the chemical, physical, botanical, and engineering characteristics of wood and other biomaterials, and the application of these characteristics to production of solid and engineered wood products in related industries. The M.S. thesis-option program requires 24 hours of academic coursework, 6 hours of research/thesis credit, and a defense of the student's written thesis before his or her graduate committee. The M.S. non-thesis (Campus 1 and Campus 5) program requires 30 hours of academic coursework and a comprehensive examination. The M.S. non-thesis Campus 5 program also requires 30 hours of academic coursework (24 hours of academic coursework, 3 hours of professional practices, 3 hours of capstone/final project) and comprehensive examination.

Academic Scholarships
Scholarship Information: The General Scholarship Application (GSA) opens on October 1st. The priority date for entering freshmen to submit the GSA is December 1st. The priority date for transfers is March 1st.For most academic, leadership and service scholarships students will need to maintain a 3.0*.
GPA requirements for maintaining MSU scholarships are based on eligibility according to specific scholarship awards, details, and requirements stated by each individual scholarship.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
