Program Overview

Data science is a new emerging field that explores and advances methods, systems, and processes to:

Represent the world as data objects;
Extract insights about the world from these data objects and turn these insights into discoveries, decisions, and actions; and
Create smart systems to perform tasks that have historically required human cognition and human decision-making abilities.

The MSU Bachelor of Science in Data Science is an interdisciplinary program designed to include three general areas of coursework: general education to develop critical thinking and writing skills; a program core of computer science, statistics, mathematics, business information systems, and communications skills; and applications of the data science fundamentals in a specific concentration.

Sports Science Concentration

The Sports Science concentration focuses on applying data science to understand the physiological and neuromechanical stresses on athletes. Students will apply data science techniques with foundational exercise science knowledge to assess physiological and neuromechanical variables and then interpret findings to improve training and performance. Students completing the Sports Science concentration will be prepared for careers working with individuals in a wide variety of sport and performance settings.

Academic Scholarships

Scholarship Information: The General Scholarship Application (GSA) opens on October 1st. The priority date for entering freshmen to submit the GSA is December 1st. The priority date for transfers is March 1st.For most academic, leadership and service scholarships students will need to maintain a 3.0*.

GPA requirements for maintaining MSU scholarships are based on eligibility according to specific scholarship awards, details, and requirements stated by each individual scholarship.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
