The program of study is developed by the student and his/her major professor with approval by the student’s graduate committee in accordance with Graduate School policy and must include core courses as specified below. In addition to the Graduate School requirements for a master’s graduate committee, the department requires that at least two committee members must be from the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences. The student must submit an approved program of study and committee request form no later than the end of their second enrolled semester.
For the master's degree in Agriculture with a concentration in Animal Science, the student must have completed or will be required to complete in addition to the graduate coursework, 9 credit hours of animal/dairy sciences courses. All students are required to enroll in Graduate Seminar during their first semester of enrollment. All students are expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Animal and Dairy Sciences field. Opportunities to meet this expectation include: audit additional animal sciences courses (below 4000 level), serve as a teaching assistant for Introduction to Animal Science, or attend departmental journal clubs. Students not holding a degree in Animal or Dairy Sciences (or related field) will be required to do at least one of the above, as directed by the major advisor.

Academic Scholarships
Scholarship Information: The General Scholarship Application (GSA) opens on October 1st. The priority date for entering freshmen to submit the GSA is December 1st. The priority date for transfers is March 1st.For most academic, leadership and service scholarships students will need to maintain a 3.0*.
GPA requirements for maintaining MSU scholarships are based on eligibility according to specific scholarship awards, details, and requirements stated by each individual scholarship.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
