Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation / Master of Protected Area Conservation

Program Overview

Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation (P3J)
A Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation gives you a broad, multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and tackling environmental issues, and develops your skills to conserve biodiversity and geodiversity in one of the more difficult times in the history of nature on the planet and build a better future for us all.

Nature, and especially wild nature, has become increasingly important for human mental and physical wellbeing. At the same time, it is fast being displaced, degraded and destroyed. An ability to think critically and creatively across disciplines, in the intersection between nature and human society, is vital for informing the management, protection, and use of the natural environment. People with this knowledge will work to protect and restore nature on our one planet.

Major: Natural Environment Management
This major provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to gain employment in a wide variety of sectors related to the natural environment and wild country. Through guided study, authentic experience and practice it enables students to understand the reciprocal relationships between people and wild nature and ways in which wild nature can be managed and interpreted by people.

Master of Protected Area Conservation (P7C)
Protected areas cover more than 15% of global land mass, 20% of Australian land, and 40% of Tasmania. Effective conservation and management of this significant land estate is central to achieving global conservation and sustainable development goals.  Conservation professionals need to be trained in aspects of governance, planning and management in order to ensure the protected area estate effectively conserves nature and natures benefits to people.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required by contemporary protected area conservation professionals working in middle or senior governance or management roles. This course covers governance, planning and management practice in government, private and community-based protected areas, as well as broader landscape contexts. Terrestrial, freshwater and marine protected areas are addressed. You will apply skills in governance, planning, and management to address complex conservation problems across landscapes and within protected areas.
