First year in Health, Nursing and Midwifery Leading to Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pre-Registration Midwifery

Program Overview

University Foundation in Healthcare Stage1 at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is designed to prepare you for entry to university-level program. During Stage 1 you will complete a range of modules relevant to your chosen degree, as well as modules concentrating on the skills that are vital for University level education such as Critical Thinking.

A Foundation pathway is available for students who:

  • Don’t meet the entry requirements to enter university level study directly (but hold GCSE level qualifications)
  • Feel that additional support at the start of university studies will help them stand a better chance of success
  • Have been away from studies for a period of time
  • Come from a different academic environment to that of the UK
  • Require additional English language training

If you fall into any of the above categories, choosing an undergraduate pathway at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is the right decision. Depending on your academic needs here at Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

Progressing from Foundation

Stage 1 will be the first stage in the 4 stage process. Meaning that on successful completion of stage 1 you will seamlessly progress to stage 2, which is the first year of a bachelor’s degree. There is no need to reapply, you will simply just progress between each stage until you reach the final stage and graduate with a degree from Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

BSc (Hons) Pre-Registration Midwifery

Midwives provide essential care during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period to both mothers and their babies. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to become a Registered Midwife. You will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) upon successful completion of the course.

Over the three year programme you will develop a sound knowledge of normal pregnancy and childbearing and be able to recognise and manage any problems that may arise. With innovative, evidence based teaching, you will spend half of your time exploring and developing your theoretical knowledge and half of your time will be spent in various clinical settings, working alongside and supported by experienced midwives. The inclusion of the newborn and infant physical examination (NIPE) competency, provides you with advanced knowledge to undertake clinical examinations of the newborn. During the program you will also have an exciting opportunity to undergo an elective placement abroad or in the UK.

Why choose this course?

  • We have an excellent reputation and will help you to develop the qualities needed that define a University of Hertfordshire graduate midwife.
  • With the BSc (Hons) Midwifery course you gain sound midwifery knowledge of normality, enabling you to become competent in recognising and managing deviations from this normality.
