First year in Animation, Film, Games and Creative Media Leading to Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in 3D Games Art and Design

Program Overview

University Foundation in Animation, Film, Games and Creative Media Stage1 at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is designed to prepare you for entry to university-level program. During Stage 1 you will complete a range of modules relevant to your chosen degree, as well as modules concentrating on the skills that are vital for University level education such as Critical Thinking.

A Foundation pathway is available for students who:

  • Don’t meet the entry requirements to enter university level study directly (but hold GCSE level qualifications)
  • Feel that additional support at the start of university studies will help them stand a better chance of success
  • Have been away from studies for a period of time
  • Come from a different academic environment to that of the UK
  • Require additional English language training

If you fall into any of the above categories, choosing an undergraduate pathway at Hertfordshire International College (HIC) is the right decision. Depending on your academic needs here at Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

Progressing from Foundation

Stage 1 will be the first stage in the 4 stage process. Meaning that on successful completion of stage 1 you will seamlessly progress to stage 2, which is the first year of a bachelor’s degree. There is no need to reapply, you will simply just progress between each stage until you reach the final stage and graduate with a degree from Hertfordshire International College (HIC).

BA (Hons) 3D Games Art & Design

  • The 3D Games Art & Design degree is the study of games art rather than games programming.
  • The course operates in a modern digital context in which you will develop skills for animation, character design, comics, concept art, motion graphics and interactive storytelling.
  • The degree explores digital modelling of characters and environments, and develops animation as well as shader techniques and level creation.
  • You will be taught to create optimised geometry and textures and apply them to PC game engines, gaining an understanding of the technological restrictions of real-time 3D graphics.
  • The degree examines sound tracks and creating sound effects.
  • You will explore games and gaming trends, looking at scenarios for PCs, consoles and interactive TV.
  • Our students and graduates frequently win awards - Sam Bang recently won 2016 Search for a Star competition. Find out more about him.
  • Voted School of the Year and Game of the Year in both Next Gen and Virtual Reality categories in the Rookies 2016.

You could also study 2D Animation and Character for Digital Media, 3D Computer Animation and Modelling or Visual Effects for Film & Television.

What's the course about?

  • This course focuses on high-end 3D games art and has been recognised as one of the best courses of its kind. It explores the digital modelling of characters and environments, shading techniques and level creation. You will explore the design side as well by using the latest software in our award-winning Film, Music and Media Building. You’ll discover how to create optimised shapes and textures and apply them to real-time 3D graphics. You’ll also explore games and gaming trends, looking at scenarios that can be applied to PCs, consoles and interactivity and VR. This course is run by experienced animation professionals and reflects the highest standards of teaching.

What will I study?

  • The course uses mixed teaching methods but the majority of undergraduate time is spent on project work and software and art-based workshops and lectures.
  • The Digital Animation courses are assessed through project work both individually and group; there is also a contextual element that requires submitted essay, and there are regular assessed presentations and professional juries.
