Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English and Theatre Studies

Program Overview

Develop your love of and skills in performance whilst studying the literature and texts relating to it. On this course the related disciplines are both studied through theory and practice.

Develop as an actor and/or writer through intensive training and production with a professional director and using our professional facilities, while building a foundation in history and theoretical study of literature.

Move on to directing/devising performances and choose to specialise in an area of English studies.

In year three you will produce a dissertation through creative practice, in either theatre-making or creative writing.

Why choose this course?

  • Learn through both theoretical and practical study, including workshops in creative writing, classes in acting, directing and devising and working on theatre productions
  • Study with dedicated teams of academic staff with a wide range of academic and professional expertise and participate in workshops and talks by practitioners and guest speakers working in the creative industries
  • Develop your knowledge of literature in history; American, African and Irish literature; film studies; Elizabethan and Jacobean drama; 19th century and 20th century literature and children’s fiction
  • Gain experience of working on a theatre production under the direction of a professional director in your first year
  • Explore language, text and performance to develop your skills as an arts practitioner - engaging with literature, film, video and live performance
  • Benefit from a practical and theoretical degree in two disciplines which opens doors to careers in areas including performance, journalism, teaching, management, community arts practice, youth work and postgraduate study
  • Explore literature from Renaissance to the present, avant-garde theatre, world literature, creative writing and film studies
