Diploma in Landscape Architectural Technology

Program Overview

The Landscape Architectural Technology program is designed for those who want to create outdoor spaces that enhance public environments. You will design spaces that future generations will use and enjoy. If you're detail-oriented, passionate about outdoor spaces, and interested in design and emerging technologies, this program is for you.

Throughout your studies, you will explore the practice of landscape architecture and the technologies used to produce designs and construction drawings for a variety of outdoor environments, including streetscapes, plazas, parks, trails, entry features and wayfinding signage. You will gain proficiency in the latest drafting and modeling tools, including AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp and ArcGIS.

In addition to hands-on learning, you will have the opportunity to visit some of the places program graduates have designed and participate in an optional co-op placement, which can provide valuable real-world experience.

Graduates of the program are eligible to become members of the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects as landscape architectural technology members. Career opportunities include roles in municipal planning, private consulting firms, or the possibility of starting your own business in landscape design, working for land developers, or collaborating with environmental companies.

What you will learn

Confidently enter the workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to begin a career in landscape architecture. In this two-year program, you will learn how to:

  • Complete a final design project of a chosen theme, embedded in research and best practice
  • Inspect landscapes using industry standards
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner individually and as part of a team
  • Communicate using appropriate written and verbal techniques to meet the needs of your audience

NAIT’s Landscape Architectural Technology diploma program is accredited by the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects and is the only Landscape Architectural Technologist program recognized by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.
