Bachelor of Arts in Music

Program Overview

Develop your creativity and perform, teach, compose, and communicate with others through music. The program in Music offers a low student/teacher ratio that allows for personal attention, development and growth, nurtured by a dedicated faculty.

It may be taken concurrently with a Bachelor of Education. There are many opportunities to participate in ensembles and other performance activities such as the Laurentian University Choir, Laurentian Concert Band, Laurentian Jazz Combo, Sudbury Jazz Festival, and Sudbury Studio Singers, among others. Preparatory courses in performance and theory are available.

There are opportunities to study conducting and methods for various instruments. The major in Music Studies does not require an audition.

The Music program covers three interrelated disciplines: theory, history, and performance (classical or jazz).
Laurentian’s Department of Music offers a low student/teacher ratio and small class sizes that allow for personal attention, development and growth, nurtured by a dedicated faculty. We offer a three- and a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Music, which may also be taken concurrently with a Bachelor of Education.

Program Highlights:

  • There are opportunities to study conducting and methods for other instruments and to participate in the Laurentian Univeristy Music Association (LUMA). There are many performance opportunities in the City of Greater Sudbury, through the department and on the student’s own initiative. Students take part in guest lectures, performance workshops and larger musical productions. Some music history courses have performance laboratories to focus on performance practices for that period. Music, like all of the fine arts, helps to make life beautiful. Music touches the soul of humanity, and even reaches those who cannot communicate through words. Training in music is integral to developing creative individuals who can perform, teach, compose, and communicate to others.
