Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Workplace and Labour Studies

Program Overview

Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to resolve conflict at work. Build and manage work relationships. Influence government policy. As a workplace and labour studies student, you will learn to improve the working world through teaching, research, and community outreach.

Partner with workplaces, the labour movement, and community organizations to conduct local research, and engage in public policy debates. Study issues such as low-wage work, disability rights, and equity. Gain valuable real-world experience with 300 hours of 3rd and 4th-year work placements in the local community.

In Workplace and Labour Studies, students are prepared for careers that improve work and strengthen communities. It offers undergraduate degrees as well as career-long learning for professionals that are both practical and applied.

The Labour Studies program has grown out of a deep commitment of its associated faculty members to advance workplace practices and improve local labour and employment policies.
Labour Studies faculty have conducted local research on major issues such as low-wage work, violence in the workplace, major strikes, and health and safety in order to broaden the discussion and understanding of day-to-day work issues. Faculty and students were instrumental in establishing The Sudbury Workers' Education and Advocacy Centre, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to educating, representing and protecting precarious, non-unionized workers. Employers tell us that they value our students' knowledge. Laurentian's Labour Studies program is only one of four in Ontario and the only program that has a focus on Northern Ontario.
