Bachelor of Commerce in Actuarial Studies / Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Dual Degree)

Program Overview

Biomedical science is one of the most contemporary areas of medicine - think IVF, a cure for cancer, and new life-saving vaccines. This rapidly-growing industry requires people with the skills to commercialise biomedical research, or apply commercial knowledge and understanding in research environments.

You will undertake research methodology training and carry out an independent research project in your specialist field, working closely with a supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling. The course offers a pathway to higher level research in biomedical science. There is a wide breadth of biomedical research available that provides a high degree of flexibility for you to pursue your honours year in a field of your choice.

Studies can be undertaken within one of the schools of the faculty, including: Biomedical Sciences, Central Clinical School, Eastern Health Clinical School, and Public Health and Preventative Medicine.  Studies can also be undertaken with one of the affiliated institutes, such as the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute or the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.

Major: Actuarial Studies
Actuarial studies gives you the skills to identify, analyse and quantify risk, using mathematical, econometric and financial models. This major gives you the skills to pursue a career across a range of fields including traditional pension and life insurance, general insurance, enterprise risk management, fund management and econometric modelling. You will learn forecasting and econometric modelling tools and develop the technical skills to apply these tools to a wide range of business settings across the public and private sector. Subject to unit choices, you may meet some of the requirements of Part I of the Actuaries Institute professional qualification, which you will need to work as a professional actuary.
